For many, music has a way of shaping life’s most cherished memories—songs that take us back to special moments, familiar melodies that feel like home. For Lorraine, a longtime Vancouver resident and accomplished singer, music has been the soundtrack to an extraordinary life.

From jazz clubs to dance bands, she’s spent decades performing and sharing her voice, creating memories with every song.

Now, in her next chapter, she’s found another stage—one where community, creativity and independence take center spotlight. At Terraces on Seventh, a boutique-style senior living community in South Granville, Lorraine has discovered not just a place to live but a place to thrive.

Made for the stage

Lorraine’s story began in Toronto, where from an early age, she knew she had a voice meant for the stage. Passion and hard work led her to an incredible and rewarding career as a singer, performing with several prominent dance bands and jazz groups. Reflecting on her early days in music, Lorraine shares, “In 1953, I joined a band. The kind of music they were playing then was from the 30s, 40s and 50s, post-war jazz. Jazz was my first love. Ella Fitzgerald was the singer I admired the most—she was my first influence.”

After years of performing, life took Lorraine down several amazing paths. When the time came to consider independent senior living, Terraces on Seventh felt like the perfect fit.

“I sang here many years ago, and I loved it,” she recalls. When her husband’s health began to decline, she knew they needed to make a move. “We went on many tours and didn't like any of them. Then I realised, why didn't I think of Terraces? We just loved it here.”

For Lorraine, moving to Terraces on Seventh meant returning to a place filled with warmth and familiarity. A touching reminder of her musical past resurfaced: “The previous housing coordinator found a picture in the archives of when we played here on Christmas. I didn't remember it.” Now, surrounded by a vibrant community, Lorraine continues to embrace each day with the same passion that has guided her life.

At Terraces on Seventh, Lorraine embraces each day with independence and connection. "My day’s a bit different," she shares. "I make my own coffee and breakfast, but others enjoy porridge, croissants and coffee in the lobby." Whether solving the New York Times crossword, shopping, visiting friends or spending time with her daughter, Lorraine has found a rhythm that works for her. She enjoys the activities, saying, “It’s not just exercise. There are art classes, dancing, flower arranging, and movies. It’s a lot of fun.” With welcoming friendships, great meals and downtown Vancouver just ten minutes away, Lorraine has found a place that feels like home. “It’s a community,” she says, “and they really try to make it like that here.”

Bright days ahead

Lorraine’s journey is a testament to the beauty of embracing change while staying true to the things that bring joy. "I get to sing here," she says. "Later this month, we're having a pub night. I've got a wonderful pianist coming, and we're going to have a little fun." Music remains a vibrant part of her life, and her creativity continues to grow. “I'm going to be recording my fifth CD next weekend, actually,” she adds. Lorraine proves that every new chapter holds exciting possibilities.
