Living in one of the country’s busiest cities, you’d think we’d be spoiled for choice when finding things to do with small children in Vancouver. Still, it can be difficult for parents to find a location that offers an engaging and enriching environment for children while also providing a space they, too, can actually enjoy.
Sure. Parks, arcades and play zones are fun. But they can get loud and overstimulating for kids and adults alike fast – not to mention the safeguarding, cleanliness and hygiene obstacles.
Throw in the fact that we live in a city where it can rain for over half of the year – further limiting the options by removing outdoor spaces – and finding an ideal family-friendly locale may seem impossible.
Searching for something to check all these boxes themselves, parents Josh and Talia Bender have taken matters into their own hands to create a fun, imaginative indoor play space for parents and caregivers to bring their young children that offers just as much for the kiddos as it does for their adults.
Creating a kid-friendly café in Vancouver
Vetted Vancouver locals, the Benders have the advantage of knowing the ins and outs of the city while also bringing in outside knowledge from living in several cities across North America for 10 years.
Returning home in 2018 to raise their three children, they used this expertise and combined knowledge to fill in the gaps and create PlayScape Café, a natural, clean, and safe environment for children to ignite their imaginations and explore while also providing an oasis for modern parents and caregivers.
Opening on March 19, the flagship's first location is located on the corner of Main and 33rd in Vancouver, and it sits in a prime, central spot, just steps away from beautiful Queen Elizabeth Park.
While the little ones are off creating their own worlds, playing and meeting new friends, parents and caregivers can enjoy exceptional espresso drinks featuring the best beans from local roasters and prepared by their professional baristas.
Getting hungry? All guests are invited to indulge in delicious locally-sourced snacks and food from vendors, with fresh items available on a rotating basis.
A play cafe from a parent’s perspective
Arguably the most compelling pro of PlayScape Café is the fact that it was created for parents, by parents. In other words, the Benders have distinct insights into what other parents look for in a play cafe and incorporate those elements into their design down to the tiniest of details.
Unique features such as fully stocked washrooms with toddler-size toilets for potty trainers and dedicated indoor stroller parking for those rainy Vancouver days illustrate the thought and consideration that went into not only creating a fun and comfortable space, but a haven for families in Vancouver.
Cleanliness is also a top priority. High-quality play structures and toys made of wood and other organic materials will be available for little ones to play with, as well as an interactive and educational video projection system, arts and crafts stations and a book corner. All of these will undergo rigorous hygiene practices, with staff constantly cleaning all surfaces. The entire establishment will also undergo regular deep cleans and toys will be disinfected regularly.
Spend less time trying to find a cafe compromise for you and your family and more time on spending quality time with those you care for most.
