When Teresa moved into Tapestry at Wesbrook Village, she never imagined she would end up leading art classes for residents at both of Tapestry’s Vancouver communities for independent seniors. An accomplished artist, Teresa continues to pursue her artistic passions and share her incredible talent with other residents who have discovered their own creative aptitudes.
“The resident art classes have been a great success,” says Teresa, who moved into Wesbrook Village after a trial stay convinced her it was the perfect community to live in for the next phase of her life. “Residents who have never drawn or painted before joined the classes and are succeeding. It is just marvelous. I love seeing people happy and satisfied – and sometimes even astonished by what they create.”
Tapestry proudly encourages residents, like Teresa, to share their passions to create an environment where others can explore new interests, and in doing so, co-create a culture of wellness based on unique community preferences. Wellness is essential to maintain independence and Tapestry is committed to offering a holistic approach so residents can strengthen mind, body and spirit as they continue to live meaningful and purposeful lives.
Teresa’s art classes are thriving, as are other resident-led programs and initiatives, including lectures on philosophy, astronomy and travel, as well as creative writing classes, book clubs and other activities that support life-long learning, connection and engagement. Residents have the flexibility to choose to be as busy as they wish based on their personal interests and desires.
“Our residents define what is important to them and we happily encourage and enable their efforts to create an active aging environment that is authentically local,” says Adena Waffle, Senior Vice President. “Our approach is what makes Tapestry truly unique as active aging communities for independent seniors.”
Gerry, who lives at Tapestry at Arbutus Walk, has diverse interests and hobbies, including walking up to three kilometres each day in the beautiful neighbourhood that surrounds the community. He focuses on keeping himself as healthy and well as possible so he can enjoy life with the many friends he has made after moving into Arbutus Walk.
Gerry is very clear that as one ages, finding continued purpose and meaning is critical to staying connected and engaged with life. “It’s not about getting old,” says Gerry. “It’s about being who you are, have been and still enjoy being.”
At Tapestry at Wesbrook Village, Hanno brought her love for nature and the environment to the community after moving in when a broken arm made it difficult to function in her own home.
When not taking her daily stroll through Pacific Spirit Park which is located at Wesbrook Village’s doorstep, Hanno relishes working with other dedicated residents to cultivate and tend the rooftop garden for the benefit of all to enjoy the spectacular surroundings. “I just love being in nature,” says Hanno. “I am a great believer in the healing power of beauty and if the space is beautiful, it helps everyone!”
