FDU shapes career success
At just 27, Ria Emmanuella has the skills and mindset to do just about whatever she wants in her professional life.
This success is largely due to her schooling at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Vancouver campus, where she received her Master's in Hospitality Management Studies two years ago.
“After graduating, I was really prepared mentally and I had the confidence to know that I could do whatever I wanted to do with my career,” she says.
Now a banquet manager at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, Emmanuella manages a team of more than 100 staff who help oversee events such as conventions, galas, fundraisers and the like. It’s a position that gives Emmanuella a front-row seat to seeing fundraising goals met, connections made and lives changed.
“I go home and feel like I helped make the day run very smoothly so that everything goes well, so that’s a very rewarding feeling,” she says.
From managerial tasks to paperwork and people skills, there’s little Emmanuella can’t do. And she points to key differentiators at FDU that help put her over the top: smaller classrooms with state-of-the-art technology and a hands-on learning model complete with computer labs and study spaces.
“FDU really helped me with my confidence and my people skills but I think the biggest thing was helping me with my time management,” she says. “It was very challenging at first but the program made me want to take on more responsibility and be entrusted with different kinds of tasks.”

FDU’s focus on global perspectives resonated with Emmanuella. Originally from Jakarta, Indonesia, she had just four years of work experience before joining FDU.
“My professors really got to know me personally – I was not like just another student in the class,” she says. “We had diverse people from all over the world sharing their experiences and that helped me to have a better understanding of all the diverse hospitality jobs out there.”
Emmanuella knows that her future career prospects are many: she could travel abroad, find any number of opportunities domestically or stay right where she’s at.
“Fairmont is a really big brand in North America and I would like to see myself growing with the company,” she says.
