When most of us think about the holidays, we imagine lively get-togethers with family and friends, enjoying traditional food and drink, festive music and other special traditions. For older adults, though, the holidays can sometimes be a lonely and difficult time.

A Government of Canada report indicates that up to 20% of older adults experience symptoms of depression. Social isolation and loneliness are key contributors, but a lack of physical activity also plays a major role, as exercise is vital for maintaining good mental health.

During the holiday season, older adults may feel the absence of a spouse, or friends more intensely especially if loved ones live far away, creating a heightened sense of loneliness and isolation.

The team at Tapestry, loves to celebrate the holiday season, by creating a festive and welcoming atmosphere enjoyed by both residents and employees. From festive decorations and traditional meals crafted by their skilled culinary team to special events like hot chocolate tastings, visiting choirs and themed art classes, Tapestry aims to bring holiday cheer that will brighten the spirits of their community members.

Jean relocated to Tapestry in November 2023 after spending 60 years in her family home. Her decision was influenced by an injury and difficulties with maintaining the house. As Jean recollects, moving in prior to the holiday season was a great decision on her part.

“Tapestry does a really nice job. There are always events going on and I was always going somewhere or doing something. And I could wait for people to invite me out, so it was the best of both worlds,” says Jean.

John, who moved to Tapestry from the United Kingdom in Dec. 2023 to be closer to his son and family, values the community's warm, home-like atmosphere and the friendly people who make it special. “I really enjoy Christmas here. Everyone makes you feel so welcome – both the employees and the people who are living here – so it’s like being in your own home, but you are meeting new people,” says John.
