SCRAP-IT® is proudly celebrating a landmark milestone with over 50,000 vehicles scrapped since their inception in 1996. This year also marks the not-for-profit's 25-year anniversary.
“Lined up bumper-to-bumper 50,000 vehicles would line up all the way down highway 1 from Langley to Merritt,” explains Diane Roberts, CEO of SCRAP-IT®. “It’s a great achievement that proves that British Columbians are really invested in preserving the environment and working together to create a greener future.”
On May 18, SCRAP-IT® will be hosting a virtual presentation to celebrate this grand accomplishment in the journey towards a greener future for B.C.
Members of the public are invited to attend the FREE event to learn more about the program and how it works, as well as all the benefits this initiative provides.
The first 150 people to register for and attend the event will receive a very special gift bag — including a High Sierra backpack, $25 Save On Foods gift card, and swag from SCRAP-IT® — delivered directly to their homes.
Every registered event attendee can also enter for a chance to win an electric bike package from Rad Power Bikes (valued at over $2900).
Special guest speakers for the virtual event include:
- Minister Bowinn Ma — MLA North Vancouver-Lonsdale & Minister of State for Infrastructure Parliamentary Secretary
- Parliamentary Secretary Kelly Greene — MLA-Richmond-Steveston & Parliamentary Secretary for Environment
- Blair Qualey — President, New Car Dealers Association and Chair of the SCRAP-IT Board
- Hu Wallis — Former Chair of the original Steering Committee and Former Chair of the Board
SCRAP-IT® is a not-for-profit society focused on clean transportation initiatives in both B.C. and Alberta. The scrap vehicle program is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower exhaust pollutants across the province.
Permanently removing fossil fuel burning vehicles from our roads and replacing it with an electric vehicle creates a significant GHG reduction, which has a positive impact on climate change. Every vehicle scrapped has its components properly recycled, thus providing another layer of positive environmental stewardship.
Throughout 2021, SCRAP-IT® will be offering $6,000 and $3,000 rebates for new and used electric vehicles. B.C. residents can refer to the Qualification Requirements and 5 Steps to EV Ownership pages for qualifying information.
SCRAP-IT® also administers the CleanBC Go Electric Transportation Options Program (TOP), which includes rebates for electric bikes, transit passes, and car share credits to further incentivize B.C. residents. The rebate values are based on the GHG reduction that occurs when a qualifying older vehicle is scrapped.
