Air Canada has introduced an earlier check-in cutoff time for anywhere it flies, including flights out of Vancouver (YVR). The change takes effect on September 4, 2024.

Air Canada has introduced an earlier check-in cut-off time for anywhere the airline flies.

Travellers flying domestically and internationally must check in 60 minutes before all flights instead of 45 minutes (the current cut-off time). The new rule goes into effect on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Only air passengers departing from the Toronto Island (YTZ) airport will have a shorter check-in cut-off time (20 minutes).

Air Canada says it is notifying customers of the new check-in deadlines.

"This change ensures a smoother, more efficient boarding and baggage loading process, and gives everyone peace of mind in preparation for takeoff," the airline told V.I.A.

Travellers can drop off their bags as early as four hours before departure, reducing "congestion at security and customs."

Air Canada cautions that it cannot accept additional bags for a flight once the baggage deadline has passed.

Air Canada tips for smoother travel from Vancouver

Air Canada advises customers to check in for their flights ahead of schedule. They can do so online or using the mobile app starting as early as 24 hours before their scheduled departure.

Travellers who prefer to check in at the airport should arrive well before the cut-off deadline.

Air Canada also advises travellers to provide ample time before flights to check in, drop off bags, clear security, and get through the airport without feeling rushed.

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) encourages travellers flying from the airport to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours for U.S. and international flights.

Travellers departing from B.C.'s biggest airport can also reserve a spot at the security checkpoint ahead of their flight during peak hours for flights within Canada, to the United States, and to select international destinations with the YVR Express Program.
