Last-minute travel from Alberta just got cheaper for locals willing to make the trek from Abbotsford International Airport (YXX).
If you were planning on visiting Edmonton this month and haven't booked a ticket, WestJet's discount carrier, Swoop, is offering 25 per cent off base fares heading to the YXX airport.
The sale is valid for one-way, direct flights from the Edmonton International Airport (YEG) to Abbotsford for only three days this month: Tuesday, July 25 through Thursday, July 27.
Tickets must be booked by Thursday, July 20 at 8:59 p.m. using the code "SWOOPON" during checkout.
The cheapest ticket available during the travel window is on Wednesday, July 26, when a one-way ticket only costs $48. However, the base fare is already so low on this date that the discount doesn't offer much savings.
Instead, some of the other, more popular travel times offer the best opportunity for savings.
If you were planning on flying back to B.C. on Thursday, July 27, or if that date works with your availability, then you can take 25 per cent off the base fare of $29.16, which works out to a discount of $7.29. The ticket regularly costs $78.98 and you can subtract that from the total price, meaning you'll pay $71.69 with all taxes and fees included.
Flights from Abbotsford to Edmonton start at $47 and range up to $167, depending on what day you leave.
If you don't need to fly this month, flights on the popular route drop down to a jaw-dropping $29 for a one-way ticket. When possible, it always works best to book this route in advance.
On June 9, WestJet said it will be winding down Swoop's operations, citing fierce market competition. Existing Swoop flights and packages won't be affected by the announcement and customers may continue to book tickets. Swoop does not have any bookable flights beyond October 28, as the carrier hasn't published a schedule beyond that date.
