Vancouver International Airport (YVR) says the flow of traffic has returned to normal following several days of widespread delays and cancellations.
YVR spokesperson Chloe Reynaud tells V.I.A. that the Nav Canada team is continuing to keep travellers "moving safely and efficiently" on Thursday, April 17, following the delays. However, passengers should check their flight status with their airline before heading to the airport.
YVR's departures page shows only three delays for Thursday. On Wednesday, the airport reported a whopping 32 delays and 16 cancellations.
A significant number of flights arriving at YVR, however, are delayed. YVR's arrival page shows that 27 flights will arrive late on Thursday. On Wednesday, an eye-watering 72 flights were expected to arrive late.
FlightAware's online flight tracker does not indicate that YVR is experiencing delays, although 45 flights were cancelled in the last 24 hours. On Wednesday, the software indicated that YVR's departing flights were delayed "an average of 32 minutes (and increasing)."
Nav Canada says flights are running on schedule, but travellers should still check their online status
Nav Canada spokesperson Maryam Amini tells V.I.A. that "safety remains the highest priority in all aspects of service delivery" and the department no longer has a temporary Traffic Management Initiative (TMI) at the airport.
"We regret the impact recent TMIs have had on the travelling public as we continue work to minimize impacts," she said.
"Working with our staff on this front, we're taking active steps to minimize potential impacts this weekend."
Amini says the "personnel resourcing outlook for today as well as the Easter weekend is improving" but customers are still encouraged to check their flight status online.
Nav Canada is making "substantial investments in people and training programs" to improve its Canadian ecosystem. Particularly, the Vancouver airport is one of its priority regions for staffing efforts, she added.
