Environment Canada has officially issued a snowfall warning for Metro Vancouver as a productive system moves cross the Lower Mainland.
Now, the department predicts that snowfall with total amounts of 10 to 15 cm is expected for Metro Vancouver and the western Fraser Valley tonight (Jan. 14) and into Wednesday morning.
Flurries are expected continue for the rest of this afternoon as an unstable cold airmass transits across the Lower Mainland. Following this, the forecast calls for periods of heavy snow in the evening.
The heaviest snow will be overnight and Wednesday morning as the warm front lifts over the region.
Snowfall warning in effect for:
- Metro Vancouver - central including the City of Vancouver Burnaby and New Westminster
- Metro Vancouver - North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
- Metro Vancouver - northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
- Metro Vancouver - southeast including Surrey and Langley
- Metro Vancouver - southwest including Richmond and Delta
Drivers should prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas.
