Police have opened an investigation into an apparent arson attempt in East Vancouver last week.
The fire occurred the morning of June 9, according to Sgt. Steve Addison of the Vancouver Police Department, in a back lane near Renfrew Park on East 20th Avenue.
"The investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made and no suspects identified at this time. We are reviewing the circumstances, including the location, suspect description, and MO to determine if this has links to any similar incidents in the area," he writes in an email to Vancouver is Awesome.
The resident of the property where the fire started has collected and uploaded video of the incident to YouTube. In the video, it appears a man in a black and white tracksuit lights a box on fire next to a telephone pole in the lane.
"The fire burned for about 30 minutes unnoticed before my neighbour saw it as he drove out of his garage on his way to work," writes the resident.
They're looking to the public for tips about who the man is that they suspect started the fire.
They also write that the fire was put out thanks to a neighbour who spotted the flames as they were driving down the lane. The neighbour was able to throw a coffee on the flames and alert the resident to the flames. The resident was then able to further douse the fire before a fire truck arrived.
