Thousands of people are without power on Friday, Jan. 10 across British Columbia due to a powerful windstorm that is hitting the South Coast.

According to BC Hydro's outage list, a whopping 12,305 customers in the Lower Mainland and along the Sunshine Coast are without power. There are 24 outages listed, and while a few of them are due to scheduled work, others are under investigation.

Earlier this morning, Environment Canada issued a wind warning for parts of Metro Vancouver noting that "Strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring." Strong southeasterly winds of 70 km/h gusting 90 km/h near the water developed over the morning, but are expected to drop below warning later this afternoon.

Currently, 4,000 customers in Surrey, 1,070 customers in Abbotsford, 1,850 costumers in Maple Ridge, 4,800 in Burnaby and Port Moody, and 400 customers in Langley are without power. In addition, the BC Hydro website shows a number of other places with power outages, including the City of Vancouver.

Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur due to the windstorm. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage.

Call 1 800 BCHYDRO (1 800 224 9376) or *HYDRO (*49376) on your mobile or report it online.

If you see a fallen power line, stay back at least 10 metres and call 911.
