Video: 'Serious injuries' after Richmond cop stabbed, suspect shot

The incident took place in the 9800-block of Glenthorne Drive.

A police officer was seriously injured on Thursday night and subsequently the suspect was shot by police, according to the BC RCMP.

Around 11 p.m., Richmond Fire-Rescue asked RCMP for help for a man allegedly setting a sign on fire in the 9800-block of Glenthorne Drive.

Police officers arrived at the scene and found the man who they say was “uncooperative.”

During the police interaction, a struggle ensued during which the police officer was stabbed and the man was shot by police, RCMP said.

The man and police officer were both transported to hospital by ambulance to be treated for what are believed to be "serious injuries."

The Richmond RCMP Serious Crime Unit will be investigating the initial call for police and the subsequent assault on the police officer.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Richmond RCMP.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIOBC) is investigating the police actions in the incident.

"Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the incident and if any force used by police was necessary, resonable, and proportionate in the circumstances," the IIOBC said in a statement.

The IIOBC investigates "incidents of death or serious harm that may have been the result of the actions or inactions of a police officer, whether on or off duty."
