An event predicted by The Simpsons came to life right here in the Tri-Cities, minus the part when Homer dances in his briefs.
Beer lovers and other commuters were treated to a sombre sight when a truck with a broken trailer dumped hundreds of cases and cans of Budweiser on the eastbound side of Lougheed Highway in Coquitlam on Tuesday (Aug. 17).
The incident was first reported around 1:30 p.m. near Colony Farm Road.
Coquitlam RCMP confirmed to the Tri-City News there was no collision that took place and no injuries were reported — except for some cracks and dents in the cans that spilled beer onto the road.
For Port Coquitlam resident Brianagh O'Driscoll, it was a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence when she captured video of the clean-up around 4:30 p.m.
"My mom and I just thought it was funny, couldn’t believe our eyes," she said. By the time they drove by, traffic had backed up beyond United Boulevard.
"It felt like a TV show skit. We originally drove by around 3 - 3:30 p.m. and came back the same way to get a video."
In O'Driscoll's video, the truck appeared to be carrying several pallets when part of its trailer somehow split open.
Coquitlam RCMP confirmed this was because the truck had separated from its trailer while driving on Highway 7, which caused its load to tumble out onto the road.
Mounties blocked the right-side lane for several hours while crews worked to move the sudsy mess.
The section of Lougheed Highway eventually reopened after 10 p.m.
