Rain, rain and (yes) more rain in Vancouver's forecast this week

"Raincouver" is going to live up to its name, according to Weatherhood.

Rain's on-again, off-again relationship with Vancouver may likely be prominent post-Family Day long weekend.

V.I.A.'s Weatherhood is predicting consistent rainfall this week for most local neighbourhoods, including more than 25 mm on Wednesday, Feb. 19 — and possibly Friday, too.

Residents of Hastings-Sunrise, however, can expect 30 mm of rain tomorrow.

Lighter rain expected for Tuesday (less than 5 mm) and Thursday (less than 10 mm), will provide lulls for Vancouver commuters.

Westerly winds may also be slightly stronger between 15 and 20 km/h in communities like South Vancouver, Langara and the Southlands, as well as Trout Lake and Strathcona.

Meanwhile, temperatures are all in the positive for Vancouver this week.

Daily highs will hover around 10 C for Stanley Park, Yaletown, Granville Island and Mount Pleasant, according to Weatherhood.

The mercury may rise a little bit higher at nearly 15 C for southern areas, as well as UBC, Jericho, Killarney and Kerrisdale.

Currently, the Southlands is the warmest place in Vancouver at 11 C, Dunbar is the coldest at 4.5 C, and South Vancouver is the windiest at 12.5 km/h.

Vancouver shelters, warming centres

It's not known yet if Vancouver will re-open extreme weather shelters, which closed on Sunday.

According to the city, shelters are put in place when temperatures are near 0 C with rainfall "that makes it difficult or impossible for those experiencing homelessness to remain dry."

As well, shelters can open when any of the following occurs:

  • Sleet or freezing rain
  • Snow accumulation
  • Sustained high winds
  • Temperatures at or below 0 C, or "feels like" 0 C with wind chill
  • Rainfall of at least 50 mm in a 24-hour period
