Yesterday was a bit of a strange day... It started out blazing hot, with the sun beating down on revelers at events, beaches and parks across the city. But that changed rather abruptly in the late afternoon - the rain came pouring down, and we were reminded once again that you can never predict the weather with 100% accuracy. Outdoor weddings got ruined, picnics were rained out, The Roots had to cancel at the Virgin Festival and the Illuminares Lantern Festival got sloppy... But in exchange for these inconveniences, we had the opportunity to witness one of the most breathtaking lightning storms and sunsets in Vancouver... ever!
Thundershowers, high humidity and a coastal haze resulted in a multi-hued evening sky that became a brilliant orange glow just before the sundown. Hundreds of thousands of people who had gathered to watch the fireworks "ooh'd" and "ahh'd" in unison as they were treated to amazing fork lightning displays. Photographers, both amateur and professional, were out in full force. If you managed to snap some great pics of the lightning or sunset last night, send them to events[at]vancouverisawesome.com with the subject line "Awesome Sunset" and we'll put them on display in a future post! More pics after the break...
