POSTED August 5, 2009 BY Maurice

The 33rd Annual Powell Street Festival took place at Woodland Park this past Saturday and Sunday, during an unusually hot BC Day long weekend.  Despite the scorching sun, people came out in droves to celebrate the arts, crafts, culture and heritage of Japanese Canadians.  Just like in past years, the tasty assortment of Japanese food was a major attraction as well!  You can find a collection of photo highlights from this year’s festival after the break…

Aw Snap. I can’t believe I missed this festival for the third year in a row! I’ve got to get my act together. Looks like a fab time… sorry I missed the sumo. Those tattoo’d beauties would’ve been a sight to see… ;)

I missed it too. I especially like the top shot and the shot of the little girl eating corn on the cob. Nicely done.

Thanks all for reppin this past weekend.

Woodland was def good but we’ll be back at Oppenheimer next year (festival’s namesake and all).

The festival’s Generation Movement exhibit is on its last day today (THURS, AUG. 6) until 6pm at the Helen Pitt gallery as well.
    GENERATION MOVEMENT: Collaboration & Collection
    Exhibition: August 1st to 14th, 2009
    Opening: Friday, July 31, 8pm
    Artist’s Talk: Thursday, August 6, 6pm
Helen Pitt Gallery 102-148 Alexander Street, Vancouver)
    Wednesday-Saturday, plus Sunday August 2
    noon-5 pm
    More information: 604.683.8240
Generation Movement is an interdisciplinary collaborative exhibition of contemporary Japanese Canadian performance-based works in which contemporary artists Kaori Kasai, Cindy Mochizuki, and Rafael Tsuchida collaborate with a non-artist member of their own family in another generation. The exhibition is curated by Lyndsay Sung.

Kenny Endo was sick, Rhythm Clash collabo was even better than last year, i believe we had a new sumo champ – the guy with the tatts down his back in pic #17. The other guy in pic #17 is Ted Mastumoto, long time defending champ of the tournament, he was a national level wrestler from SFU back in the day and a judoka as well, the boys aint no joke!

Big ups to Kristen Lamberton, Miko, Naomi, Julia, Sabrina, John Y and everyone else on the committee and board for another good one

Beautifully captured! The fest was fun but I missed out on the food due to the extreme heat that day. I guess there’s always next year!
