CHINESE BAKERIES ARE AWESOME!

POSTED September 14, 2009 BY Jef Choy

Man I love these places, there’re every where in East Van and when you just need something to tide you over between meals they are the place.  Also if you need a meal, for five bucks you can eat like 4 items….not saying two pineapple buns, an egg tart, a pork bun, and raisin twist is a good meal, but it will fill you up.

This particular one stoked me out real good because it was open at like 9pm, bakeries for centuries have opened early and closed early…these guys aren’t havin’ it and that’s one of the reasons why I think they’re great.  The baked items are always fresh and my personal favourite is the cheese danish.  Any of the sweet breads make real good french toast too!

This one is part of the complex w. T&T, I take no responsibility to what happens to you while trying to find a parking spot.  I will say though it’s worth it.

I have a few other favourites too, but what are yours?

Usually, when I walk to my Mom’s house from mine, I take the side streets route and check out all the cute houses and pretty gardens between Main and Knight. But every once in awhile I’ll stroll up Kingsway instead and grab some Chinese bakery snacks on the way. There are a handful of Chinese bakeries between mine and my Mom’s house and I’ve stopped at a few but I don’t have a favourite yet. One of my fave treats from the bakeries though, is a fried banana bun. The banana inside is always really ripe and sweet. There’s also something I tried once that I think might have been called a “butter bun”? It was pretty good. I also like to stop at the butcher shop (New Sam Po in particular) and get BBQ pork.

New Town, represent!! [158 E Pender St]

I’m with Crompton on this one, New Town is THE place to go for buns. Keefer Bakery has always been a staple with my family. T&T by Stadium Station is good too when you’re no where near New Town.

Mmm!!! New Town for steamed buns for sure!

i mess with the one on hastings right near the scariest 7-11…. i’m a big fan of the curry pastries….they’re like a chinese jamaican patty….i like the eggball too….they’re like a chinese honey crueller…

  • Gee

You have to try the little donught balls they have on the top of the far right corner at the 1st Avenue Bakery. So good. Taste like ones your grandma would make. Even better in the toaster oven/micro for 30 seconds. Mmm. Only good thing about living near Renfrew.

Do any of your readers know the recipes for some of Wo fat cookies and mooncakes?
