Hawker’s Delight
The Main & King Ed equivalent of Prata-Man in Richmond, Hawker’s Delight is an unbeatable casual stop for cheap Singaporean/Malay eats. A Hawker stall is what they call cheap, open seating food stall centres in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, etc. Like Prata, all dishes range from the $4.75-6.75 range. I think the most expensive dish is the lamb curry which is $6.75 (pictured bottom left). Check out the enlarged menu pic under the cut to see all the killer tasty deals. One thing I was bummed to find is that they dont do the curry puffs anymore but have veggie fritters instead. These are alright but no too diff than many other deep fried veggies in other Asian cuisines. The curry puffs were pretty uniquely Sing/Malay though. This is also in a wicked few blocks of eateries on the Main & King Ed area that have a solid sample of the multicultural cuisines Vancouver has to offer…..(Read more under the cut)
HAWKERS DELIGHT
4127 Main Street, Vancouver – (604) 709-8188

On the north side of King Ed is Zakkushi (Japanese chicken skewer BBQ), Beefy Beef Noodle or something like that next to Zakkushi (im told dope and cheap beef brisket noodle soup, this place took over from Rekados), Crave (west coast comfort food). Sun Sui Wah across the street on the other side of Main. And beside Hawker’s is Quejos (Brazilian style cheese buns) and across the street from there is Nyala (African), a Pho (Vietnamese) joint who’s name completely escapes me, the Reef (Caribbean) and a new Thai restaurant (Something Chilli House?) that replaced the longime Sandy’s Filipino restaurant (chef Sandy Daza is currently looking for a new locale to bring Sandy’s back) and I havent even covered them all in those few blocks…oh, and not to mention a handful of very Main street type coffee shops of course too.

I was just there on Friday night having my regular Laksa!! The food there is awesome for the price you pay.
And that vietnamese restaurant across the street, I don’t think it has a real name. I think the actual name is “Vietnamese”. I tried to streetview it on Google maps it when it gets to the Grind, the next step south on Main goes to the alley shot! LOL!

The laksa here actually isnt that great, im not sure why i ended up having it this weekend but all the other dishes from the curries to noodles to the veggie dishes are all pretty good.
Banana Leaf laksa is tight but of course a bit more in price.
You can also buy laksa paste from places like T&T and Cristal mall market in Bby and you make it just like Thai curry, just mix it with coconut milk and put whatever else you want in the soup.

I think you had it because even o.k. laksa still beats the crap out of most noodle dishes….

OK, so I guess I’d better try this place. I walk by it all the time but have never really felt up to taking the risk at the time.

Hawker’s lamb curry is the best! But if you want laksa, Bo Laksa King on Joyce (1 block north from Joyce Station) is currently Vancouver’s best laksa. Rich tasty coconut curry broth and all the herbs like laksa leaf!

thanks for the note on bo laksa, denniss, thats right by me and im a laksa lover, will see if its better than banana leaf’s. tamarind hill (pretty much a banana lear equal out in new west) has good laksa too.
for those out in south van – there’s kedah house right by the plaza with the Vision just east of the Knight bridge and those out by Hastings in East Van, there is Suri Malaysia just off Nanaimo i think.

@Boon @Denniss, Thanks for the tip guys. I’ll be sure to try a few of these places, Bo Laksa King for sure, since I’m kind of a laksa nut myself.

It’s true….Laksa is the next Ramen….

Triple One Malaysia inside Cristal Mall foodcourt next to Metro also has laksa, better than Hawker’s imo.
Not sure if Prima Taste is still around on Robson & Seymour. They make Malay pastes and stuff for groceries too.
Banana Leaf and Tamarind Hill have the best ones so far though i think. Cant remember about Tamarind but BL has both Sing and Malay style.
