DAN DAN NOODLE SOUP: YOPO!

POSTED February 7, 2010 BY Jef Choy

Being the jock I am, one-upmanship is something I partake in regularly.  Though it’s never been official, Boon and I have been having an ongoing feud to see who has the edge in the battle of VIA noodle supremacy.

I’d say so far Boon has had the edge, with his comprehensive coverage of Laksa in Vancouver, but I’m upping the ante with one of my favourite noodle dishes, Dan-Dan or Tan-Tan noodle soup.

When I was living downtown, the place to get this dish was at Yopo.  If you’re in that neck of the woods, it’s the best Chinese place by far, the menu is extensive, the kitchen is up front and clean, the people who run it are always friendly too.  It’s great home cooked style food just like how Mama Choy cooks.

As you can see, it’s rich!  The broth is spicy and peanuty, I’d say it’s more rich than ramen (without the cheese and extra stick of butter), it’s neck and neck w. Laksa.

The noodles used in Yopo’s version is the thicker egg noodles, I’ve had it at Chong Quing too and they use a thinner rice noodle.  I like them both, the egg noodles make it feel more like a meal, but the thinner noodles soak up the broth really nicely.  At five bucks even, it’s a steal in Yaletown.

    I’d try the noodles…then choose a side….

I’m a fan of tan-tan noodles so I gotta try this. I’ve been told that Tsim Chai Noodles in Richmond is good too (North side of Westminster Hwy/Buswell St., across from Richmond Public Market)

  • Boon

Hardy har, the battle wages on.

Yup, love Dan Dan noodles too. That noodle place west of Broadway & Cambie has it dope there (theres 2 good noodle places on that block, cant remember which is which).

The Shanghai style in the far left corner at Crystal mall also has it.

Peanut type broth is nice for a change.

I got it at the peaceful, it was good but there’s stuff i like there more…..
