TravelSmart during the 2010 Winter Games and win!

POSTED February 8, 2010 BY Bob Kronbauer
Tweet

Use your Games-time travel plan: instead of driving, try teleworking, ride-sharing/carpooling, cycling, walking, taking transit or working flex hours. If you’re taking transit, avoid peak travel times, allow yourself extra travel time and be prepared for crowds wherever you’re going. Visit TravelSmart2010.ca for more information and resources to help your travel during the 2010 Winter Games.

To help you TravelSmart during the Games, we’re giving away a 6-week 2010 Games Transit Pass (3 zones)! How are you getting around – or not getting around (teleworking?) – during the Games? Submit your 2010 Games TravelSmart plan in the comments below and be entered in our draw to win!

NOTE: the 3 zone pass that we’re giving away is not the one pictured above, the one we’re giving away is actually worth $204!!!

I will be working from home during the Olympics, and getting around via a combination of the bus and walking.

  • JLo

I am leaving the car at home and taking transit to work and for other activities.

  • http://www.thebiggerbangtheory.com Tamara

I go to Capilano, and school is closed for the break so technically I don’t have to go anywhere. But I’ll probably brave transit and if it is really terrible I can always bust out the ol’ bike. Luckily it’s been warm enough that cycling will probably be really awesome!

  • Nate

biking to work when it’s sunny or Skytrain when its raining. I live near Robson and Thurlow…

  • http://blog.mikebrowne.com/ Mike Browne

I might be able to telework some days but not the whole time. I’ll probably be hopping on the Skytrain down at Holdom for my trips in on the days I have to be in. I would take my bike, but as going in is all downhill and coming home is uphill and I am out of shape and fat, I would probably die. Yeah, transit for me…

  • albert

    walk walk walk!

unless i get that bus pass :)

  • Patricia

I work near Granville Island, which will be a hub of activity throughout the Games, so I plan on using transit, and my feet during off-peak times to get to and from the office.

  • Thalia

equipped with camera for the upcoming Olympic days, I will be leaving my house half an hour ahead of schedule, walking two blocks to my bus stop, getting on to the bus straight downtown for an hour commute… my intention is to walk around before/after work during those days to catch up with some of the Olympic action and events every day

  • Mark Britch

I live up at sfu in burnaby but all my classes are at the vancouver and surrey campuses which I normally drive to. BUT! During these olympic days, I’ll be taking the bus down the hill, then taking the skytrain to and from downtown (harbour centre) and the surrey campus (surrey central). My car will be out of comission during these two weeks.

  • parker!

Olympics or not, I take transit!!!

  • Rob

Luckily I’m able to walk to work downtown. I did have to drive last Friday and I could already feel the congestion coming back into downtown.

  • Toby

I’m going to take Skytrain and Canada Line as much as possible. I’m going to avoid buses by walking to and from Skytrain stations. Thank god I live close to a station. Basically, avoiding roads all together and sticking with grade-separated transit.

  • malcolm

Our Plan? Since we have NO WORK and NO SCHOOL we will park and ride from Delta to Vancouver for the fun. That bus pass would be handy!

  • http://www.YourDoseofLunacy.com Monica Hamburg

I work from home, so I don’t have to make further smart plans on that, luckily. But will be riding the bus and Skytrain to see friends and fun stuff at Olympics.

  • http://seanbuckely.ca Sean

    Working from home hopefully.

  • http://beansandmanatees.blogspot.com/ jocelyn

i’m riding my bike! i just outfitted it with fenders. i’m excited to zip past everyone. :)

  • http://www.twitter.com/joywit Joy

I live in West Van and work downtown so will be busing it as far as Denman and then start humming “these boots are made for walking” as I get my morning stroll on.

  • Philip

I am walking from home to the office and will take the skytrain for my work appointments. Hopefully get fit from all the walking as well!

  • Kristina Slater

I am volunteering at Cypress and to get there driving would be very unwise! Currently I am taking the bus to King George Sky Train Station, then taking the Sky Train to Waterfront Station, from there I am taking the Sea Bus to Lonsdale Quay, then the Olympic Bus network to the top of Cypress. It works pretty well, you just might arrive an hour early for your shift but better early than late!
I’ve actually found I enjoy the ride, it’s way better than the stress of driving, and am considering keeping it up for work after the games!

  • Brad

Biking mostly, and walking around as well.

  • Tricia Gould

I have parked my car for the Olympics and thrown away the keys. The bus will be my main source of transport but plan to walk around our beautiful city to get caught up in all the buzz as much as possible. Hoping I get used to driving less so I can reduce my carbon footprint!

  • dc

my office is adjusting it hours to hopefully avoid rush hour madness. we’ll see if it works. most of us take transit ^_^

  • Rob

I just moved here a week or so ago from the other side of the country. I had to leave my dear bike behind… So I’ll be hoofing it back and forth over the bridges at all hours. I’d much rather bus it though…

  • http://www.djneoteric.com Neoteric

I think ill bus downtown and try to walk as much as i can. bus out to north van. poor car is getting neglected this month!

    ps pick me!

  • Savry

I live right by Olympic Village stn and I plan to walk/ride the train to get to all of the Olympic activities in Vancouver, Richmond and Surrey! Gonna be fun and interesting times!

  • http://van-media.blogspot.com A L WANTS TO WIN!!

    Transit, walk, admire.

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/aaronrts/ Aaron

Well, I’m just planning on getting in early. I’m used to London so a crammed skytrain will just feel like home!

  • http://robertmearns.com Robert Mearns

I’ve been rounding up pigeons. Once I get enough ribbon to attach them all together we’ll see who owns the sky!

  • http://minorublvd.com MinoruBlvd

I’d love to travel around the city freely during our Olympic school and document the event through my the lens camera. I hope I win.

  • Laura Coulson

I’ve got two jobs, one at Granville and Robson and the other in North Vancouver. I’ve got to get around somehow! Naturally, I’ll use my helicopter to bypass everything…I wish!
I’ll be biking as much as I can, taking the sea bus and walking walking walking! It’s a great way to see all the activities during the Olympics and get right into it.

  • Angel T

I’ll be walking, busing, skytraining. Have to enjoy the sights and activities in person.

  • Vincent

I work on Robson Street and i live in Burnaby so
i plan to transit about 2-3hours ahead of my shift.. and if im early, i’ll spend my extra time looking at the olypmic stuff downtown :D

  • Vanlove

The plan so far is to take transit and mix this with walking!

  • Stephanie

    Busing & walking as usual!

  • David T.

I’ll be learning to work from home for the duration of the olympic break or I’ll be learning how to sneak into the studio while its ‘officially’ shut down.

The plan is looking like lots of transit and lots of walking with camera in hand.

  • http://shootyouintheface.com Trevor Broad

well unless I win the pass I’ll be doing a whole lotta walking! tis the life of a starving artist.

  • Pitka

I’ll be taking the skytrain/bus to vancouver and explore the area as much as possible during my break from school!

  • http://mainebot.blogspot.com Tremaine

I’ll be shuttling my bike to work on the bus in the evening and riding home in the morning when rush hour traffic picks up. The best of both worlds!

  • maria

I am going to carpool wherever possible and or walk.

  • anglea

I am going to avoid driving as much as possible and only go where i really need to go.

  • kelsey

relying on the skytrain to get me to work and back home! driving would take forever!

  • http://thesmorgasboardblog.com/ Meghan

I’ve been walking to and from work since January, and I will continue throughout the Games!

  • Morgan

I’m pretty lucky since I work like a 5 minute walk from my apartment. Definitely NOT looking forward to the waits for the 99 to get me to practice though! I think I’ll have to bust out the bike a little earlier than usual.

  • http://www.twitter.com/chadleaman Chad

I transit to work, taking the two weeks during the Olympics off to party, and then volunteering at the paralympics – this would be a life saver!

  • http://www.siongchin.com/blog Siong

I will be working from home most of the time, but will be taking the skytrain whenever I need to get into the office.

  • http://rbostyle.com rbo

I’ve booked off most of the next 2 weeks from my job in Metrotown, so I’ll mainly just be working from home out in North Delta… but will be bussing+training+walking my way to downtown as much as possible to enjoy all the free shows and hoards of tourists!

  • lo

I am getting my bike out early this year for fun things! and walking and bus/skytraining the rest of the time.

  • Zach

I am transit-ing to work. Trying to hit up the skytrain and walk as much as possible. The vehicle traffic isn’t much quicker than my feet ;).

  • Jen

I’m going to brave the Skytrain on my way to volunteer shifts downtown, but if that takes too long, I plan to bike from Burnaby to downtown. Probably bike around to events as much as possible when the weather isn’t totally miserable :) Otherwise transit!

  • http://www.vancouveriawesome.com Sue

I will take the bus during the olympics!

  • http://www.straight.com cas

I will be taking a bus in to work but probably at an earlier time so not at rush hour. I hope to also bike as well as it’s actually faster than the bus some days, and better for me.

    Cheers,
    Chris.

  • Matthew M

i’ll be bussing/skytraining into yaletown when it’s raining. bike riding when it’s not. doing the same when trying to go to some of the free events.

  • Percy

I live and work downtown so I can easily walk to all the venues around here and the skytrain will be super convenient to get to the Surrey Celebrations and the Richmond O Zone.

  • piz nuts.

I can’t wait for a bunch of the downtown streets to be closed…I’m going to travel as I always do, as fast as possible, on my bike. I’m the guy with the skateboard and the backpack.

  • Kim Werker

I’ll be working from home as much as possible, and picked up transit tickets for getting around, figuring I’d stay home instead of braving the streets. With a rad pass, though, I’d definitely explore more!

  • Austin

I prefer walking over anything else. But for work, it’ll be a walk to the skytrain.

  • Lisa

Walking everyday during the olmypics if not taking transit!

  • mik

blowing past all the spandexed horsemen atop multi-thousand dollar steeds, on my rusty piece o crap ten spd, all the way from clark/b-way to gville and 70th!

  • Jeff

I’ll be taking Skytrain downtown during the Olympics…during off-peak hours!

  • http://twitter.com/CyaanTestMissK Kristina

I’ll be skipping each morning and evening for 20 mins to get from home to Waterfront Station and back. I ride the seabus each day to get to work in North Van. Depending on the way I walk I can glimpse the madness of Robson, the lights ‘n lanterns on Granville, and the happy-snappy visitors who’re enjoying skipping around just as much as me!

  • http://pokeyouindaeye.mypodcast.com JGuimond

The multi-method approach… but probably mostly skateboarding, walking, and taking the bus.

  • Louise

I will do what I always do, take transit. Best way to get around.

  • http://basementclothing.ca Blake!

    buss + canada line!

  • Rose

I’ll still take the skytrain *blech*

  • Cathy

Skytrain, bus and walk. Can’t wait. Not. lol

  • Kevin

Walking, transit, and bike as much as possible. If I have to drive, I’ll have to give myself lots to time to get where I’m going!

  • m!

    Apparating/Dissaparating.
    Flying enchanted cars.
    Riding broomsticks, Thestrals, and Hippogriffs.
You know, all the basic modes of transportation.

  • Jed

ill be taking the skytrain downtown to make friends!

  • http://dlbrows.tumblr.com Dave

Skytrain, bus, walking. Car is sitting in the garage for the next month.

  • Tommy

I would love to take the transits to dt instead of driving around looking for parking space

  • Nice Young Chap

On my trusty steed, face to the wind, shall I pass through this fine metropolis.

  • Yu

I will be getting around by taking transit and walking, as usual. My school will be closed during the games, so I would love to take an advantage and explore around town(maybe not around downtown, haha)

  • http://www.nomushroomplease.com k8ie

I work on the UBC campus and my plan is to change my work day and go to work earlier in the morning to avoid the busy times. There will be a game getting out and a game going in, and commuter traffic all converging on the campus from about 4:30 – 5:30 so I’ll start work early and be done by 3:30 so that I’m not part of that traffic mess. People will be able to get to their games easier and I’ll be home in time to cook something delicious for dinner!

  • Frances Cabahug

As much as possible I’ll be walking everywhere. Even if I need to get to North Van from South Main. Yikes.

Oh well, it’s going to be good for my glutes, right? I better have buns of steel after this. Or at least buns of mercury.

  • http://www.tysonfaa.com Tyson Faa

  • http://www.laurenkeogh.com Lauren

After deciding to take time off to make my life stress-free over the Olympics , I will be walking, cycling and using Transit to get downtown for photography work and of course, the free concerts.

  • Lina

I live on Bowen Island and to get to work in Vancouver, volunteering (with an organization called Beauty Night) downtown, and (OF COURSE) the concerts and events I will be relying on ferries, my feet, and transit to get me around!
    My schedule:
    Walk from house to Ferry
Ferry from Bowen Island to Horseshoe Bay (they come once every hour and stop at 9:30)
Bus from Horseshoe Bay to downtown
then repeat on my way home.

  • Brian

i’ll be using the olympic line to get to my classes at emily carr! as well as regular transit to get to the olympic line.

  • Alan

I would love to really soak up the sights and sounds of the games, but having only landed in Canada from the UK as a PR four weeks ago, money is a bit tight, so this travel card would he a god-send, it would allow me to see so much and really get to know this fabulous city.

  • jackie

    walk, walk, walk, bike, walk.

  • http://a.kid.in.vancouver@gmail.com Lindsay

Primary destination over the Olympic period (other than work): the free Wilco show at David Lam Park! For that, travel will luckily mean a nice walk on the seawall.

Other than that, I will be making myself small and squeezing onto skytrains.

  • Christopher

I’m planning to leave my car at home and take the skytrain as I’m anticipating West Broadway to be busy. The drive to Burnaby is already a long one as it is!

  • http://www.masturblade.com Matt

    A nice souvenir!

  • Chrissy

as a girl who’s on the job hunt, but has spent a few months living back in her parents’ basement in abbotsford until last week when i moved to new west, the skytrain in my best friend. that transit pass would help a (literally) poor girl get around, particularly to a few free shows ;)

  • evoh

I’ll be taking my awesome vespa out for a ride, in combination with the transit system. I can’t wait to ride the street car!

  • Vanessa

I’m flying to San Francisco for 2 weeks so that someone else can have my spot on the 99. . . Its a sacrifice I’m willing to make for the greater good.

  • Rachel Chin

walk, bus to work but will be working majority of the time at home to save my sanity!

  • Avi

I am moving into my friend’s house on Commercial, right by Broadway station. Friend’s are good!
