The Proof – Lisa Cinar

POSTED March 3, 2010 BY Tina Ok
Tweet

Lisa Cinar is an illustrator and writer of picture books amongst other things. For the last 6 years she has kept busy working on various illustration and book projects, and exhibited her work in Canada as well as internationally.
She loves drawing, English breakfast tea, picture books, graphic novels/comics, Marc Boutavant’s work, hikes, all of her amazing friends and tons of other things!

The Proof

1. My Dog Pancake is helping me getting my illustrations for my show at Collage Collage framed.
2. One of the many amazing flags my extraordinary, cool, almost 80 year old neighbour Graham makes and flies in his yard!
3. A collaborative image made by myself and Ian Johnston for his semi-illegal, though highly enjoyable podcast ‘The YaYa Neat Show’.
4. Part of my studio featuring a tiny glimpse at my collection of Picture books, as well as a Papier-mâché Mask which I originally made for a performance at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
5. A China town postcard from my new Postcard series ‘Hello Vancouver’
6. Robert from Solder & Sons and Colleen Heslin from the Crying Room. A place I love and try to go to as much as possible but still hardly ever get around to it. Also said coffee/book shop will be carrying some of my Hello Vancouver postcards very very soon.
7.  My tea kettle, favorite olive oil (mostly because of the beautiful illustrated can), an artwork by my long lost friend Julia Feyrer and two amazing bottle openers. One given to me by a friend from Italy and one made by my friend and fellow artist Sue Nagy. You can never have too many bottle openers!
8. My new coloring poster, available and commissioned by Collage Collage.

The Questions

What neighborhood do you live in?
I live in the middle of Commercial Drive and Strathcona but I’m also really close to Chinatown so I kind of claim all of those areas my neighbourhood. It’s nice to have so much to choose from mood wise.

What do you do and where?
I am an a writer but mainly an illustrator. I have published two picture books. ‘The Day it all blew away’ - a BC Bookprizes honor book-and ’Paulina P. (for Petersen)’. They are both published with the local publisher Simply Read books. Later in the summer I will be teaching a Picture book illustration course for Continuing Studies  at Emily Carr. I’m pretty excited for that!

What are you working on?
I just finished putting illustrations from my first book ‘The Day it all blew away‘ together for a show at ’Collage Collage’. I also made a coloring poster for the event which I’m pretty stoked about. It’s only made up of the 4 basic shapes rectangle, triangle, square, circle and was specifically designed with lots of room to add your own thing to. I think I will make more of this sort of thing in the very near future.
Also I just launched a small Postcards series featuring different tourist attractions of Vancouver! They’re called ‘Hello Vancouver’ and you can see all of them at my (horribly maintained) blog right now.

Where can we find your work?
You can buy my books at most local book stores and boutiques like Dandilion Kids, Dream, and Collage Collage. I also sell strange handmade doll sets at Blim and now my Vancouver Postcards are selling at Blim, Blackberry Books on Granville Island, Solder & Sons, Collage Collage and soon more places to come hopefully.
I’m always really good at making stuff, but then not so up on distribution. Gotta work on that. So hey, if anyone is reading this and wants to carry my postcards… please do let me know!

Also which websites would you like mentioned?
