Last week our skateboarding editor, Frank Daniello, let you know about issue #12.1 of SBC Skateboard magazine and all of the Vancouver-related goodies inside. The issue is available on newsstands right now and if you looked closely at the cover (if you do or don't skateboard) one of the stories might seem a little out of place: the interview with David Suzuki, which I had the incredibly good fortune of being hired to shoot the photos for.
The readership of skateboarding magazines is a pretty young demographic, mostly high school kids, really. The pages of the popular ones are filled with lots of photos of and interviews with the current relevant pros and ams in the sport, a few product features, some DVD and CD and video game reviews, the odd lifestyle and arts piece and in the case of SBC Skateboard, a new feature where they introduce their readers to important Canadians, the one previous to this one being Rick Mercer. That's pretty awesome.
At the risk of sounding boastful, as a bit of a young veteran in the skateboard industry over the years I've shot portraits for almost all of the major US and Canadian skateboarding magazines. No offense to Eric Koston, Paul Rodriguez, Marc Johnson, Rick McCrank et al, but I must say that this shoot with David Suzuki will likely go down as my favourite assignment handed to me by a skate mag editor ever.
Thank you, David Christian (the Vancouver-based editor of Toronto's SBC Skateboard Magazine), for not only blessing me with this assignment, but for introducing kids to the incredibly important message that Doctor Suzuki has to relay. I'm looking forward to seeing which other important Canadians get featured in upcoming issues.
You can pick up SBC Skateboard anywhere magazines are sold in Canada.
