Winnipeg is Awesome. Cream Cheese, Neil Young, and ___?

POSTED April 13, 2010 BY Rachel Fox
Tweet

Did you catch Neil Young sing Long May You Run at the closing ceremonies of the Olympics? My inside source insists that other than kd lang he was the only performer to go live. I’m thinking Neil doesn’t lip sync.

Director Jonathan Demme’s concert film Neil Young Trunk Show is playing at the fabulously comfortable and very clean Vancity Theatre, this Friday April 16th at 10:00 pm. When I say fabulously comfortable and very clean I mean that sincerely. If I could live there I would, because if I did I would not need a maid.

Rock and Roll Will Never Die

When I think about Winnipeg I think about my friend Marcel, who always greets me with a hearty “Renard!” This amuses me because although lots of people call me by my last name he’s the only one that says it en français. Marcel has a heart of gold.

Marcel is from Winnipeg. So is Neil Young. (And really good cream cheese.)

So maybe you have no plans for Friday other than just wanting to keep on rockin’ in the free world. Tell me something else that’s really awesome about Winnipeg. Leave your witty, true, thoughtful, or downright remarkably obvious insight in the comments section. Whomever leaves the most witty, true, thoughtful or downright remarkably obvious insightful comment (as judged by yours truly) wins 2 tickets to the screening.

Enter as many times as you like.

Contest closes at 12:00 pm Thursday, April 15.

Awesomely, I saw the Winnipeg Jets take on the Leafs the first time I saw a game at Maple Leaf Gardens. Teemu Selanne was the hot new hand for the Jets, but it wasn’t to be as my beloved Leafs shut them down, with Felix Potvin recording the shutout and Wendel Clark notching a hat trick for a 7-0 win.

Maybe they’ll have a team again one day. I hope so.

  • Otto

    Winnipeg? Where’s that?

  • Glenn

I was bored in Winnipeg, had just lost my job, it was January and I was at an accounting convention. I heard there was a good deli, so I walked over to Oscar’s deli. I came from Toronto which had many good deli’s not as good as Montreal but still good, but I have lived in Vancouver for 10 years at that point and missed good corned beef. I walked into Oscar’s and I was teleported back to Spadina street. Noisy, waiters with attitude and had a bowl of soup and corned beef sandwich which rivals any sandwich I ever had.
Oscar’s is what is good about Winnipeg.

  • Rachel Fox

Oooh, those are awesome and loverly!

When I think of Jets, I don’t think of Winnipeg, but rather Kevin Arnold’s green Jets jacket. (I’ve just dated myself.) But still, I love that …

And deli food always pumps my nads. Mmm, food…

Now it’s a contest! More, more, more PEG!

  • Heather

If you drew a line longitudinally down the middle of Canada Winnipeg would be in the Western half which makes it much more awesome.

  • :P

Winnipeg had SK8 Skates, Jai Pereira and Stefan Goulet were the best shop owners EVER.

No one will ever re-create that Golden Era.

Now it’s 2010 and Green Apple skateshop runs things in Windypeg.

One of my favorite memories from the 10yrs I was there…it being so cold that while driving to the skatepark in January with Rod Ferens in his little Civic…meant whoever was in shotgun, had to scrape the ice off of the INSIDE of the windshield, the whole way to the park.

  • Jeff

I spent some of my youth in Winnipeg and have nothing but good memories. Most awesome: the Winnipeg Jets came to my school to shoot a “don’t do drugs” infomercial and I was selected to ask Bob Essensa a (pre-arranged) question on camera!

    Also awesome: Festival du Voyageur!

  • Brad

    Propagandhi.

  • http://www.excerptcize.com Cameron

John K. Sampson is from Winnipeg. If he wasn’t, we wouldn’t have, as Grant Lawrence himself calls it, “One of the most important songs ever written in Canada” Left and Leaving.

If you are driving across the country make sure to hit the Winnipeg bypass unless you want to add a few hours to your ETA…

  • Andrew

    LENNY BREAU!

  • Rachel Fox

Oh, man, these are all so awesome. The Peg is much loved.

    Keep ‘em coming!!!!

  • Rachel Fox

Thanks everyone for leaving such loverly comments about The Peg.

Glenn, I loved your story about Oscar’s deli and Heather I *almost* picked your little factoid (because I love factoids) but ultimately I think the Most Awesome Comment Award has got to go to….

:P <-Did I spell that right?) for making me laugh out loud over the thought of scraping the inside of the windshield on a cold night.

    Love that 'tude, dude. Congrats!!

  • :P

    yay!

  • Sydney Jade

@ :P I’m glad your memories of my dad (Jai Pereira) are good, not sure who you are but definitely would love to hear some more stories if you have any…
    get at me on email??

  • Winnipeg Grl

Folklorama has to be one of the awesomest things ever, but there are a million things awesome about Winnipeg, mainly the summer, and the fact that we have the most beautiful women around

@ Sydney, I was a really good friend of your mom`s, i didnt get to know your dad as well as i wished i could have, and they left an awesome impression on winnipeg!

  • push101

Winnipeger here, currently in Sydney Australia, was feeling very homesick, but reading these comments makes me so happy to get back home when I do! Before I left I thought the Peg was a crappy city as it can be kind of boring at times (everyone has to agree on this one lol) but being away really makes me realize how awesome Winnipeg is, how great the people are, and how everyone in Sydney thinks that the temperature getting to 15 degrees is cold! HA!

    I <3 WPG

  • push101

OH and my fav part about wpg is BDI :D Mmmm can’t wait for summer!
