Today's photo comes to us courtesy of Mark Toohey, who spent yesterday visiting a really cool place in the Metro Vancouver area - the George C. Riefel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Delta. I first visited the Reifel Bird Sanctuary around ten years ago, to take engagement photos of my friend and fiancé, and a blast was had by all. Where else in the Lower Mainland can you wear a duck on your head and one on each shoulder simultaneously? Plus, I've always been intrigued by larger local birds like the regal-looking subject of Mark's photo, the Heron. A bird that could make my cats turn tail and run? Auto-respect.

Last summer while walking along Guichon Creek that runs through the BCIT campus in Burnaby, I rounded a corner in the trail and there, perched upon a 15' stump of a tree was a heron. I stopped in my tracks and hoped that I hadn't startled the great bird. He/she remained there for maybe a minute while I stayed perfectly still observing it, before taking off - flying out of view with perhaps 3 good pumps of it's wings. Simply magestic.
