Domain7 is a team of solution-finders, storytellers, designers and developers, who combine curiosity, imagination, tech-savvy and good old street smarts to make the web a better place for their clients and their clients' clients. Their 50-person team works out of four offices in Vancouver, Abbotsford, Seattle and Washington DC. They put real human needs at the heart of everything they do — they call it “humanizing the web.”

We got Domain7 founder Shawn Neumann to answer a few questions about their business for us.

If Domain7 is known for one thing amongst its customers, what would it be?

We’re best known for our humans-first approach to the web, or maybe by our loaded tagline: "Humanize the web". It defines how we try to solve real life human problems and meet actual needs with the tools we build and stories we tell on the web.

Who, locally, is doing really innovative work on the web?

There’s no shortage of great tech coming out of Vancouver. No surprise, our team and many of our customers use Hootsuite every day. They’ve developed an awesome platform and just keep innovating. We also love Phonegap (which started in Vancouver but was acquired by Adobe) an incredibly useful development framework that lets us build mobile apps in Javascript, HTML5 and CSS3. I also think Chimp is doing something pretty neat—it’s essentially a lightweight web version of a donor-advised fund.

Some local brands (and clients of ours!) who are doing good work on the web? Regent College has one of the most beautiful responsive websites in higher education. TELUS Community is telling some pretty compelling stories online.

What's one cool thing you hope to see more of online?

Disruption. There're great new ideas and approaches emerging every day—thanks, in part, to the web—that are turning markets and slow-moving industries on their heads. As a team, we get excited about being part of this democratizing force.

Aside from Domain7, what's your favourite Vancouver business and why?

I’m a huge fan of Roam Mobility—I travel a fair bit and this great company helps me avoid roaming fees in the US. On our team we have big devotees of Herschel bags.

Some local businesses that frequently keep us fed and caffeinated are JJ Bean, Meat and Bread, and Nuba.

What keeps you here? Like what's the best thing about Vancouver?

Apart from the obvious reasons of awesome geography, it's Vancouver’s creative and tech community—there is so much skill and energy here. Our team loves (and takes full advantage of) nature and the endless cultural opportunities in this city—it offers a level work/life balance you don’t find in other cities. It keeps us sharp and honest in how we bring a human-centered approach to the web.
