Vancouver on the Cheap: Cheap Beach Eats

If you were to create a Venn diagram where one circle was labeled "cheap" and the other labeled "awesome", the middle point where they cross over could be labeled "Vancouver on the Cheap".

If you were to create a Venn diagram where one circle was labeled "cheap" and the other labeled "awesome", the middle point where they cross over could be labeled "Vancouver on the Cheap". In other words, this is a weekly series on things to do and places to go in Vancouver that fall into that magical category of being both cheap and awesome.Got a cheap-living tip you'd like to share? And now, for the first time ever for Vancouver on the Cheap, a guest post! This round up of cheap beach eats is contributed by the good folks at Chowmenow, a website specializing in $5 meals in Vancouver.

Vancouver comes alive during the summer. It’s those few months we can toss our umbrellas, strip down to barely-there outfits and show off our pale and pasty skin. When the only things that seem to matter are patios, people with boats, and maximum hours spent at the beach.

Long days and short nights means that the last thing we want to do is stay at home. While we’re more than happy to finally rock those abs we’ve worked so hard for in cross-fit and soak in every ounce of damaging UV rays possible, there’s a bit of a downside: we’re always eating out. So to avoid becoming an actual beach bum, Chowmenow has gathered some cheap eats that won’t cost you more than five bucks.

Okay fine, we were lying about the abs.

Kits Beach

To see, be seen, and be on the scene, it’s all about Kits Beach. On weekends it’s packed from end to end, so there will be plenty of people watching to keep you occupied. Luckily the same rings true for cheap eats. After a full-shift of bronzing, just a few steps away is Hapa Izakaya. From 4pm and 5pm is Hapa Hour, which means you can score beef tataki, ebi mayo, and chicken karaage for under a fiver.

Still hungry? Head to Local for the late night menu. Gyoza, spicy edamame, poutine, and chips & salsa are under $5 after 10pm on the weekdays, and 11pm on weekends. And yes, there’s an awesome patio. You could probably find someone with a boat here too.

If you don’t want to miss a minute and prefer something portable, there’s plenty to take and go. If it’s Tuesday you’re in luck, as it’s $2.50 beef tacos at Burrito Brothers and $3.33 Triple O burgers. For all those other days, grab $1 bagels at Siegel’s or a hot dog, onion rings, and fries at Vera’s Burger Shack for $4.99 or less.

English Bay, Second and Third Beach

Normally a quiet and rather serene spot during the year, come June English Bay is buzzing with tourists and rollerbladers (yes, people still rollerblade). If you’re okay with risking being struck down by a bicycle or two, the cheap eats are plentiful and the sand is calling.

Be warned that if you venture down to Second or Third Beach, food options are slim to none, so it’s best to bring something to throw in your backpack. To start, Ginger Garlic has two samosas for $5 in chicken, beef, and veggie. There’s also Pho Number One Vietnamese offering salad rolls, spring rolls, and vegetarian banh mi for under $4.98.

You could always opt for perfectly flakey and buttery pockets of love at the House of Empanadas. Sweet or savoury fillings for $4.65 make them affordable and portable. Another option is http://chowmenow.com/urban-rush-cafe-2/ for sandwiches, salads, and sweets under $3.95.

Jericho and Spanish Banks

If packed crowds aren’t really your thing, Jericho and Spanish Banks give you all the same scenery but with much more towel space. Here you’ll find families picnicking, the constant smell of BBQ, and at least a few ultimate Frisbee games going down.

Before you hit the sand, why not satiate yourself at the NCSC Cafe? The Classic Breakfast has two eggs, bacon or sausage with hash browns and a homemade biscuit for $4.95. Feel like breakfast for dinner? No problem, it’s served all day long.

If it’s grab and go that you’re after, head to The Mix Bakery. Sandwiches and baked goods range from $3.45 to $4.95. Love sushi? There are 17 rolls at Sun Sushi that are under $4.95 as well as appetizers and cones under $4. We just recommend eating fast, as there’s nothing nastier than warm California rolls.

Life’s a beach, so make the most of summer while you can. For more cheap eats, visit Chowmenow.
