Vancouver's first hospital was a simple tent that was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1886 which destroyed much of the city. That tent was replaced by a small 9-bed facility that didn't meet the needs of Vancouver's rapidly growing population. In 1888 the first City Hospital was built, growing into a 50-bed complex of brick buildings surrounded by gardens.

From the pictures above, can you tell where the hospital was located?

Vancouver's City Hospital was located on the corner lot between Pender, Beatty and Cambie Streets. The hospital was replaced in 1906 with the newly built Vancouver General Hospital. The original buildings were used for other civic purposes, such as housing the City Relief office in the 1920s. The original buildings were demolished in the 1940s.
