Before you start Part Three, make sure you see Part One, the "Getting There" and Part Two, "Accommodations" from the series!
The Queen Of The Peak is an annual all Women’s Surf Contest in Tofino, created by Surf Sister and Shelter Restaurant - this year it took place on October 5th and 6th at Cox Bay.
I managed to get out and check out the competition on the first day (a grey one) as the second day some of the media gals and I got to take a surf lesson (more on that in the last post). There were a lot of folks that came out to see the action and support the amazing ladies surfing on Cox Bay.
Globe & Mail photographer John Lehmann was also in town shooting the competition for the paper. I felt very inferior when I saw his lens (600mm). Here is my shot from instagram of him shooting the comp (above, left), and the shot to the right is one he posted shortly afterward.
The photo below is about as close as I could get from the shore with mine...
...but that's okay, because there was another photographer, Kyler Vos, whose two pics from IN the water on day #2 of the comp I shall show you now:
Back to my photos...
...as much as I loved watching the surfing, I was highly distracted by the amount of dogs on the beach. It was heaven...I probably met at least a dozen of the maybe 50 dogs I saw (including puppies)...and they were having just as much fun as everyone else.
The competition recently introduced a 16-and-under category called "Princess Of The Peak"...and we saw some amazing young local girls take to the waves for their own competition. (Though that didn't stop 10-year-old Matea Olin from entering the Queen Of The Peak too!) It was amazing to look out and see all these girls in their Surf Sister shirts ripping around in the water.
If you were curious what the results were...
