Welcome to the latest in our Super, Neighbours series of blog posts where we highlight incredible travel destinations in British Columbia! |
I took of for the ferry in my Lincoln MKZ Hybrid (which I fell in love with - thanks Ford! -...as evident in these posts on my instagram feed) at a very early hour, of a very foggy morning in Vancouver...
There is something eerie yet beautiful when you take a ferry on a foggy day (thanks again to BC Ferries!) - once you're inside the fog it's mostly white save for a few fleeting glimpses of mountains and wildlife.
The drive to the Comox Valley is pretty great...esp. when you make stopovers at places like the Little Qualicum Cheeseworks farm -where you can walk around on a self-guided tour and see the animals and cheese being produced...
I arrived in Comox mid-afternoon to my hotel for the night, the Holiday Inn Express & Suites. Lucky, spoiled, me, I was given a jacuzzi-suite, which was pretty amazing. The hotel also has a pool/hot tub and gym for guests, but it was nice to have the oversized tub in the room for some solitude as well. Much thanks to the CVEDS for the room!
Next I headed out to check out the WinterBites Fun Zone - which I told you all about in this post here - and to do some skating! I have never skated on synthetic ice like this before, so it was definitely a challenge, but from what I was told it is a lot easier for kids to learn on.
There were food trucks, horse drawn buggy rides, face painting, and other great family activities - which you can enjoy this weekend as well (click here for more info).
Next I was off to Locals Restaurant for dinner! I had eaten there once, before they moved to The Old House, and the food was just as spectacular as I remember. January was their Customer Appreciation Month and they had a special menu, so I couldn't resist...check out what I ate below:
Amuse-Bouche: Duck and Pistachio Terrine
Appetizer: West Coast Clam Chowder (w/ fresh baked herb biscuit)
Main Course: Jumbo Prawn Risotto (winter squash and cheese risotto)
Dessert: "Laurel's Dessert Trio" - Chocolate Mousse Cake, Crème brûlée, and Frangipane
Somehow I then rolled my full and satisfied stomach to the Florence Filberg Centre for the night's main event - the WinterBites concert series ft The Odds (with Shaun Verreault) and The Grapes Of Wrath. - there are some more this weekend (check out the schedule here). Both acts were great and got the crowd up on their feet and dancing...
The Odds (with Shaun Verreault of Wide Mouth Mason):
The Grapes Of Wrath:
The next morning was another foggy one so I decided to check out the Comox Valley's Farmers Market (which if I lived in the area, I know I would be at weekly!), which was full of great vendors, food, and live music for kids.
It was a quick, and packed 24 hours in the area, and I had a blast, which you definitely can as well, as it's just a short ferry ride away. Thanks to the Comox Valley Economic Development and Tourism people for having me out, to BC Ferries again for the ferry rides to and from, to Ford for the Lincoln MKZ for the drive, which I reluctantly gave back, the Holiday Inn Express & Suites for a great stay with super helpful staff, the WinterBites for showing me a great time.
