From now until November 6th, Heritage BC is asking the public (that’s you!) to nominate historic places that they believe are significant or important to the history and development of the South Asian Canadian community in BC. This public nominations process is part of a larger initiative, the South Asian Canadian Historic Places Recognition Project, that focuses on the stories of individuals who identify themselves as having heritage based in the South Asian regions of India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Maldives, and Sri Lanka.
A selection of nominations will be officially recognized by the Government of British Columbia and placed on both the B.C. Register of Historic Places and the Canadian Register of Historic Places. So cool! Other nominations will be included in an interactive map that will allow you to explore BC’s diverse cultural history online.
One of the best parts of this initiative is that the nominated sites don’t even have to be old. If you believe they tell a story or represent an important aspect of South Asian heritage in BC, then go ahead and nominate it! Buildings, districts, neighbourhoods, landscapes, cemeteries, and even abandoned sites are all eligible and the nomination process is open to every British Columbian. Why miss an opportunity to help shape BC’s history? You can submit your nominations online, HERE until November 6th.
Heritage BC is a not-for-profit charitable organization supporting heritage conservation across British Columbia through education, training and skills development, capacity building in heritage planning, and funding through the Heritage Legacy Fund. They’re seeking nominations from the public for historic places that they believe are significant to the history and development of the South Asian Canadian community in B.C. on behalf of the Royal BC Museum, the Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies at the University of the Fraser Valley, and the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.
