The Georgia Straight
On May 5th, the first issue of the Georgia Straight appeared with stories about art censorship, Haight-Ashbury and the youth movement in Amsterdam. The first issue was produced in publisher Dan McLeod’s apartment, then the paper moved into an office at 432 Homer...and McLeod was jailed for vagrancy. College Printers refused to publish the second issue. This radical newspaper (published every two weeks at first) stirred up a great deal of attention in the following months, before the city settled down and accepted it. The local news was forever altered because of it.
