A recycling fire on Richmond's Mitchell Island is causing black plumes of smoke on Wednesday afternoon.
A 100 feet by 50 feet pile of flammable, recycling material had caught on fire on the far west end of Mitchell Island, according to Richmond Fire-Rescue Chief Jim Wishlove.
The pile of recycling is out on an open lot and not in or near a building.
Wishlove said firefighting crews were on site shortly after 4 p.m. to put out the fire and are making progress.
"We are getting some headway on it. We've had some initial success. The thick, black smoke that everybody saw is now dissipating lighter smoke," said Wishlove.
Anyone commuting over the Knight Street Bridge is recommended to roll up the windows of their cars, he added.
"If anyone can see or smell the smoke are asked to stay indoors with their doors and windows closed for the next couple hours."
No injuries have been reported.
