A man is in hospital this evening (May 17) with life-threatening injuries following Coquitlam's first known shooting of 2023.
RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Alexa Hodgins confirmed the "brazen" and "believed to be targeted" incident to the Tri-City News, explaining it took place around 7:30 p.m. near David Avenue and Coast Meridian Road.
Officers were called to a strip mall at that Burke Mountain intersection and performed first aid on the victim before he was taken to hospital.
Additionally, police were called to a vehicle fire near Cape Horn Avenue and United Boulevard 20 minutes after reports of the shooting, and a suspect had fled in a silver/grey four-door sedan.
Hodgins said investigators believe the two events are connected.
"This area [Burke Mountain] was highly populated at the time of the shooting which is very concerning as public safety is our top priority," she said in a statement.

Police say there's "no immediate risk" to public safety after a shooting in Coquitlam this evening (May 17).
RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Alexa Hodgins confirmed the incident to the Tri-City News, believed to be the first known shooting of 2023 in the city.
Officers responded to a shooting around 7:30 p.m. near David Avenue and Coast Meridian Road, Hodgins said.
Traffic has since been partially reopened for eastbound commuters on David Avenue.
Lots of police vehicles are seen outside a restaurant in a Burke Mountain strip mall, where witnesses claim the shooting took place.
