Everywhere you go these days, there are cameras. In every pocket or purse, the ability to capture a moment is easier than ever before. But as the love of digital photography grows stronger with accessibility, there remains a number of hard core enthusiasts that still appreciate more old school methods...
That's right, I'm talking about FILM.
On August 18th, 60 photographers got together to share their mutual love and respect for the film medium during the 4th annual 12x12 Vancouver Photo Marathon (black & white edition). It's a challenging event that's open to all skill levels—professionals and amateurs alike participate, the only requirement being an enjoyment of photography (and access to a film camera).
During the marathon, each photographer is given a single roll of 12 exposure film, then throughout the 12 hour day, 12 themes are announced, and each competitor wanders the city, attempting to capture their personal interpretation of that particular theme. Some themes are vague. Some are humorous. Some are downright tricky. But you get a single shot at the theme. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't.
There is beauty in the potential to make mistakes happy accidents, and each year some truly stunning images are created.
Every year the 12x12 event grows increasingly more popular; this year tickets sold out in minutes. After the marathon is complete, participants must wait a long and torturous month before they get to see their potential successes (and failures) for the first time during a one day public exhibition.
