For National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, 2024 the Carnegie Community Centre and the City of Vancouver are hosting a block party on Main Street in the DTES.

To commemorate National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, the Carnegie Community Centre and the City of Vancouver are hosting a block party on Main Street between East Hastings and East Pender. This day presents a meaningful occasion to come together, and reflect on and celebrate the unique heritage, traditions, and knowledge of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

This event will begin with a welcome from Chief Bill Williams from Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Carleen Thomas from səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and Mary Point from xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.

The day will also feature pop-up performances from J.B. The First Lady, Mannix, Haida Dance Group, D.J. Angle, Zofia Rose, and Carnegie’s lexwst’i:lem drum group, with more cultural sharing performances. This is also an opportunity for the Downtown Eastside community to gather, celebrate, and support the Urban Indigenous community.

“Learning about and embracing Indigenous culture is critical as we continue our journey of Reconciliation in Vancouver’s 10th year as a City of Reconciliation," said Mayor Ken Sim in a statement. "As we look to the future, it's important that we continue to address inequities, advance Reconciliation, and find ways to celebrate and showcase Indigenous Culture,” he added.

The organizer is also reminding drivers to be cautious about the road closure plan, use alternative routes, and exercise patience while navigating the area during the festivities.
