Interesting Vancouver Presents—a series of interviews with ordinary Vancouverites leading extraordinary lives, has just released its fourth episode. This episode finds IV Presents host, David Swanson, in conversation with #IV15 speaker and musician, Sarah Jickling.
When you first meet Jickling, you would never believe she performs on stage—a shy personality, she hunches a bit from her height, and doesn’t hold eye contact for long. But when she’s on stage, a spark is lit within her and all previous sense of awkwardness is gone. Jickling has accomplished a lot in her short career—she’s toured across Canada, performed on national stage at Canadian Music Week, and received mainstream airplay (including the CBC), all while dealing with bipolar disorder. Without her disorder, Sarah doesn’t believe she would have the music career. It has been the main driver in her life as a musician—her music reaches out and connects with people in ways she may not have been able to without her disorder. Today, exploring her mental disorder through her music has helped Sarah come to terms with it and that’s what she wants her art to do—to let people know that they aren’t alone in this big, wide world.
