The new 'Tron: Ares' trailer features Vancouver in sci-fi setting

Breaking down some of the filming locations from these first-look clips (including ones we saw IRL)

While the first trailer for Tron: Ares has come out for the new big-budget film, it doubles as a disjointed look at Vancouver at night.

The movie was filmed in Vancouver, aka Hollywood North, in the spring of 2024, with several scenes shot outside at night (leading to overnight traffic disruptions).

The trailer opens with an overhead shot of Vancouver's Burrard Street (running left to right) with Dunsmuir Street on the left (with the little curve) and the bike lane on Smithe Street visible on the far right.

It then cuts to a motorcycle/"light cycle" chase over Cambie Bridge; V.I.A. got behind-the-scenes photos and video of the scene when it was being filmed last year. Plenty of the Cambie Bridge area can be seen in the shots, though the police car being cut in half by lasers may distract the eye.

The trailer also features several other shots of Vancouver, including actress Greta Lee being chased down Burrard by a giant Tron creation (near the Bentall Centre), crowd shots of the same area, and some sort of aerial battle over the city (the Royal Centre/RBC tower at Georgia and Burrard is visible, but with the RBC logo replaced by "SCKY").

Another shot appears to be a digitally altered view of the south arm of the Fraser River from an elevated road vista that would likely put them in the North Delta or Surrey area.

There also appears to be a blink-and-you-miss-it shot of the Lions Gate Bridge in the city as police cars get crushed.

Currently, the Tron: Ares trailer is trending on YouTube.

What is Tron: Ares?

Tron: Ares is the third movie in the Tron universe. The first film, released in 1982, was considered groundbreaking for its use of special effects. The sequel, Tron: Legacy, took nearly 30 years to reach the silver screen. It was also shot in Vancouver and used Cambie Bridge for at least one scene involving a motorcycle.

Jared Leto stars in the film as the title character, Ares.

Leto's co-stars include Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson.
