Pokémon players from Metro Vancouver and across Canada are descending on the city this weekend for a battle of wit, strategy and courage.
The ultimate question: Can they catch 'em all?
The Pokémon 2025 Regional Championship is taking place at the Vancouver Convention Centre starting Friday, March 7.
Organized by Gaming Generations, the three-day event will see thousands of competitors and fans participate in the iconic pop-culture card game, video game and Pokémon GO! challenges.
It's considered one of the largest gatherings for a Pokémon-based tournament, according to the championship's website, in terms of attendance and point payouts.
More than $130,000 in prizes, scholarships and gift cards will be handed out this weekend, along with the coveted title of "Pokémon Regional Champion."
Players will be divided among three divisions: junior, senior and masters. Winners that prove their battle skills are worthy may receive invitations to the Pokémon World Championships.
There are no qualifications or residency restrictions to enter the contests, a tournament statement explained.
However, interested participants must have a Pokémon Trainer Club account "and be in good standing" with the Play! Pokémon program.
Spectators are welcome to take in the action for a $15 non-refundable badge fee.
Vancouver is one of two Canadian cities on the Pokémon Regional Championship circuit of North America. Toronto held its tournament in December last year.
In total, 35 cities on five continents are hosting the 2024-25 competitions.
Pokémon was created in 1996 in what started as a video game that expanded into an animated TV series and other media, set in a world where humans co-exist with creatures that have special powers.
Since then, more than 1,000 Pokémon species have been introduced. Its most iconic is Pikachu, a yellow mouse-like species with a tail shaped like a lightning bolt.
