North Shore movie lovers will be able to take in a film in their cars under the stars during a two-night pop-up drive-in theatre event coming to North Vancouver this summer.

Fresh Air Cinema, FortisBC and the City of North Vancouver are combining to bring an outdoor movie event to Heywood Gravel Field July 31 and Aug. 1, with all proceeds from the by-donation drive-in showing going to North Shore charity the Harvest Project.

“In a time where many families have been struggling to make ends meet, we wanted to do our part to give back to our local communities,” Fresh Air Cinema managing director Jason Bashnick stated in a release. “The joy of cinema has given families an opportunity to spend time with friends and loved ones, with our vehicle events providing a fun and safe outing to enjoy the events they miss most this summer.”

On July 31 the 2019 super hero thriller Captain Marvel will hit the outdoor screen, while on Aug. 1 movie-goers will be treated to the 1985 hit Back to the Future, a fitting film for a modern event with a nostalgic twist.

Fresh Air Cinema, a Western Canadian-based company, has been hosting outdoor moving screenings since 2006. This summer they’ve adapted their format to follow physical distancing guidelines, including limiting their showings to 50 vehicles. They’ve also paired with sponsors such as FortisBC to allow for by-donation showings, with all proceeds going to charities helping communities handle the COVID-19 crisis.

The Harvest Project is a registered Canadian charity that connects with more than 1,000 people on the North Shore each month, offering supports such as one-to-one client-care coaching, emergency drop-in visits, appointments within grocery and clothing support programs, and retail thrift shoppers.

“It’s been amazing to see the impact we have been able to make for local charities across the province, and we are so grateful to everyone who has donated what they can in support,” said Bashnick. “We wanted everyone to feel included to attend our family-focused events, and have an opportunity to spend time with loved ones.”

Tickets are free, with a suggested donation of $30. A full list of all social distancing guidelines and information on obtaining tickets is available here.
