This may be the first you're herring of this, but False Creek has lots of tiny fish in it.
To celebrate that fact, the City of Vancouver has announced it's hosting a free, family-friendly event celebrating the herring of False Creek as they spawn.
Herring are small fish that like to be in big schools. Speaking of education, the event will have a focus on educating people about the environmental impacts around the body of water which is not a creek. Herring are a place to begin that conversation; a spawn point, if you will.
"The event will include family-friendly displays and activities, along with City staff and local organizations, including the Georgia Strait Alliance, Fraser Riverkeepers, Squamish Streamkeepers, Sea Smart, False Creek Harbour Authority, and Year of the Salish Sea," says the city in a press release.
Specifically, the city will use the event as a point to engage with people on the Sea2City Design Challenge, which looks to guide the development and ecological revitalization of the False Creek area.
"Early Sea2City design concepts will be on display, created by the two multidisciplinary design teams who have been exploring ways Vancouver can adapt to rising sea levels and coastal flooding," says the city.
Herring Day will take place on Granville Island at Fisherman's Wharf on Saturday, April 2 between noon and 3 p.m.
