Cafe Deux Soleils, operating on Commercial Drive in Vancouver since 1994, announced Oct. 4, 2022 it was closed permanently.

"With heavy hearts, we announce today, Cafe Deux Soleils is permanently closed," reads a message shared Tuesday (Oct. 4) to social media by the veteran East Vancouver hangout.

Located at 2096 Commercial Dr, Cafe Deux Soleils was to many in the neighbourhood - and city - a trusted local haunt, known for its cafe fare, community focus, and support of the local arts scene.

The restaurant, which opened in 1994, had been for sale for several months; its listing caught the eye of Vancouver food media when it hit the market at the onset of 2022.

Customers visited Cafe Deux Soleils for their brunch staples, like veggie hash and eggs, and perfect hangout vibes. The eclectic art displays showcased local talent, as did the poetry slams, comedy shows, and other live performances. Many a local performer hit the stage at the café during its impressive nearly 30-year-run. Parents and caregivers in the neighbourhood loved that the café also welcomed kids, even providing toys for tots to play with. A bulletin board was a go-to for promoting local arts and culture events.

"It has been a privilege to serve the community for almost 30 years," note owners in their parting message.

Update: Chancho Tortilleria will move into the vacated Cafe Deux Soleils space in early 2023. The Mexican restaurant is relocating from Davie Street due to redevelopment.
