Coconut pudding shop closes Vancouver location, veteran indie café moves in

The business began at the Night Market and still has a Richmond shop

The Vancouver location of a Richmond dessert shop known for its coconut pudding and bubble teas is now closed, however, the address is already in the hands of a 30-year-old indie café and open for business.

Ba Ba Tang seems to have vacated 1172 Robson St in February; the location has been removed from the dessert shop's Instagram (but still appears on its website).

Launched at the Richmond Night Market in 2021, Ba Ba Tang captured attention and tastebuds with its fresh fruit and coconut pudding desserts served in coconuts, as well as their yogurt drinks and bubble teas. They also have a popular line of cartoon-themed sweet dumplings (mantou).

The business, which shifted to a still-open permanent Richmond location at 2010-9111 Beckwith Rd, has a sweet origin story about a young girl craving coconut treats and her father opening the shop to grant her wish. The dessert shop's motto is "A sweet embrace of fatherly love in the palm of your hands."

Ba Ba Tang added the Robson Street location in 2022.

However, after a short period of inactivity, a new tenant is up and running in the former Vancouver Ba Ba Tang. Caffé W, which opened its first location back in 1995, has a new second location, which opened in early March.

Caffé W specializes in café fare, like sandwiches, coffee, and housemade pastries, as well as bubble waffles and crepes. Its original location is at 3646 W Broadway in Kitsilano. The Robson shop offers gelato, too.
