A new Greek restaurant is set to open in Gastown in the space that had previously been home to the Sardine Can.
Skewers Souvlaki has set up shop at 26 Powell St, and has been doing private "test kitchen" dinners, as well as catering gigs, to get ready for its official opening.
Prior to Skewers moving in, Spanish tapas bar Sardine Can had been a long-time staple in the neighbourhood; they closed permanently in spring 2020, following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The restaurant has had the keys to the space for some time, however, they appear to be just getting the business off the ground this fall.
Souvlaki traditionally features pieces of meat that have been grilled on skewers (so it's clear to see where the name came from). During the "test kitchen" services and for catering, Skewers has been putting together souvlaki-loaded wraps and plates, with fries and all the tantalizing Greek trimmings.
The official opening date has been set for Nov. 10, 2021. Hours will be Tuesday to Thursday 4 to 11 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 4 p.m. to midnight; and Sunday 4 to 10 p.m. Skewers will be closed on Mondays.
