There's a new corner café now open for business along The Drive in East Vancouver's historically Italian community.
Il Mundo recently made its debut at 1858 Commercial Dr, and the all-day "caffe" describes itself as "a celebration of the rich and vibrant culinary culture of Italy."
The Il Mundo menu features casual café-bakery bites, like a soufflé egg sandwich with cheese and bacon, croissants, quiche, and other treats like brownies and cinnamon rolls. The cafe features hot and cold coffee and espresso beverages as well as tea, tea lattes, lemonade and apple cider. Il Mundo also serves gelato.
The addition of Il Mundo to the neighbourhood may come as a bit of a surprise to those who watched the space for some time in anticipation of it becoming the home of a second location for Burnaby's popular FDL Cafe. In 2020, the business, which was known predominantly by its full name, Fior Di Latte, was taken over by new ownership and underwent a bit of an evolution. It's not clear why they were unable to get off the ground to the west in Vancouver.
Previously, the address that's now home to Il Mundo was that of neighbourhood veteran Spade, which closed up in the summer of 2021.
