Watch: What to expect at the first King Taps restaurant in Metro Vancouver

Next up for the Cactus Club sibling: a massive outpost in a high-profile North Vancouver spot

King Taps, the buzzy laid-back sibling concept from the Cactus Club family, is now serving guests at its first location in Metro Vancouver.

The brand officially opened the doors to its new restaurant at Willowbrook in Langley on April 3.

Cactus Club opened its first King Taps in downtown Toronto in 2017 and a Kelowna location in 2022.

In addition to the Langley outpost, King Taps is at work completing its renovation of a 10,000-square-foot two-storey space in the revitalized Lonsdale Quay project in North Vancouver, which will be the next in the chain to debut.

King Taps has indoor and outdoor dining with seating for 340 people

In Langley, King Taps is situated in a newly built 11,000-square-foot freestanding space with seating for over 340 guests across the interior lounge and dining rooms, plus an enclosed all-season patio with an adjustable slatted roof and an open-air seasonal patio.

The space was designed by McKinley Studios and has a modern but welcoming look, with "organic textures, lush greenery, warm lighting, and a curated collection of incredible artwork from Canadian artists including Graham Gillmore, Tyler Toews, and Jason Dussault," according to a media release issued Tuesday, March 25.

What's on the menu at King Taps?

When it comes to food, the King Taps menu is about approachable eats which reflect the concept's ethos of being a spot to hangout and socialize. It's clear the culinary team has its eye on trends (including a few borrowed from our now-frenemies south of the border), such as putting hot honey on pizza and having the option to add ranch for dipping.

A starter like the Crispy Sushi seems to have emerged as an early popular selection (source: un-scientifc data gathering from social media posts about first visits to King Taps). The dish is a take on something popularized by Nobu in the States, which is a set of deep-fried rice rectangles topped with a chopped raw tuna topping. Ubiquitous on sushi bar menus in places like Los Angeles for well over a decade, the item is only now gaining popularity in Vancouver; it's one of the most-ordered items at Tozen on West Broadway, for example.

Overall, King Taps isn't reinventing the upscale-casual restaurant wheel, but it does come to the party a little more loose and ready to play than its big brother, Cactus Club (which, incidentally, is located kitty-corner from the new King Taps in Langley). You'll find things like fried shrimp tacos, an excellent Caesar salad with a tender fried chicken cutlet, a trio of supple meatballs, and a super creamy play on a Carbonara pasta, along with salads, burgers, and sandwiches.

Pizza the biggest draw on the King Taps menu

Ultimately, though, King Taps' signature offering is its pizza, which is available in nearly a dozen iterations, including the popular "Stinging Bee," with Soppressata, Kalamata olives, and a hint of Calabrian honey, as well as modifications like gluten-free crust and a choice of those aforementioned dipping sauces (for an additional charge). The pizzas are thin with a nice chewy crust; I personally found the Stinging Bee to be neither sweet nor spicy, but enjoyed the deeply salty and briny punch of the olives against the richness of the meat.

From the bar, expect regional craft beers and wines as well as cider, classic cocktails, sugar-free margaritas, and even a large sangria for sharing. Go one step over the border and get the Ranch Water (soda with lime and a splash of tequila) or keep going south and slip into vacation mode with their Spicy Jalapeño Margarita.

King Taps also does weekend brunch and has some Happy Hour deals, both afternoon and late-night. Happy Hour runs daily from 2 to 5 p.m. and again from 9 p.m. to close with $5 signature beers and highballs, $10 cocktails, $5 off pizzas and share plates, and half-price wine bottles.

Take-out with dedicated pick-up window launching soon

The Willowbrook King Taps is also hoping to be a beacon for sports lovers, with its 14 TVs and three projectors, all set to show the latest NFL, NHL, NBA action (and more). A note that some may find the indoor dining room quite loud, with increasing respite available the further out you go (into the covered then open-air patio sections).

The kitchen is making most of the menu from scratch from King Taps' massive open kitchen, which also includes a zone specifically set up to handle take-out orders. The new restaurant's dedicated take-out window is located at the kitchen, accessed on foot from the 200 Street side. Take-out is expected to launch shortly, and the window set-up was designed to make picking up your meal to go (or for delivery app workers to do the same before heading to you) easier.

The new King Taps at Willowbrook is located at 6141 200 St in Langley and is open Monday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to midnight; Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m.; and Sunday from 10 a.m. to midnight.

Video: Checking out the first King Taps restaurant in Metro Vancouver

@forkingawesomevia It’s like Cactus Club’s less buttoned up little brother…and now this sibling restaurant has opened its first location in Metro Vancouver. Located in a sprawling standalone space at Willowbrook in Langley, the just opened King Taps is already a popular draw - reservations are being snapped up fast. There’s a main dining area and bar with screens of all sizes for catching the game, an all season patio with an adjustable roof to let the sun in, and a seasonal patio. King Taps is known for its pizza and dipping sauces, shareables like tuna with crispy rice and Korean fried chicken, burgers, and handhelds, plus mains like a carbonara, and a couple of decadent desserts. They’re also doing weekend brunch and happy hour. The bar has a ton of cocktails, lots of taps, pouring regional brews, and more, including plenty of non-alc options. The vibe is fun and social. The restaurant is beautifully designed (check out the honeycomb patio table layout and all the incredible art!) and there’s a huge open kitchen. When takeout comes online you or the delivery person will pick up from a dedicated window around back. They make just about everything from scratch on site, and the food is approachable and on trend. Heads up, the next King Taps to open will be in the coming months at Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver! #f#forkingawesomev#vancouverbck#kingtapsl#langley ♬ MUTT - Leon Thomas
