National Asian casual restaurant chain closes only Vancouver location

Bye bye Basil Box

Toronto-based Basil Box has quietly closed its only Vancouver outpost.

The Thai-Vietnamese-inspired fast-casual restaurant chain recently shuttered its location at 810 Burrard St. near the intersection with Robson Street.

While there has been no official announcement of the closure, the city's business licence database lists Basil Box as "Gone out of Business," mail is piled at the restaurant's front door, and the phone number is disconnected.

Offering a variety of bowls and boxes with rice or noodles, customers could customize the ingredients of their dishes like many build-your-own sandwich or burrito shops.

Basil Box still has one location in B.C., in Metro Vancouver at Burnaby's Amazing Brentwood mall.

The space on Burrard won't be empty long. Local Vietnamese and Cambodian chain Pho Quynh Express has submitted paperwork to the city to take over the spot.

It will be the fast-growing chain's fifth location; they just opened their fourth location earlier this year when they took over Carl's Jr's. only Vancouver location. The first Pho Quynh Express opened in 2018 in Olympic Village.
