Vancouver's modern Indian restaurant scene has had a recent addition, with the debut last month of Sirka Gourmet Indian Kitchen in South Granville.
Sirka, which has two locations already in Langley and Surrey, first gave signs it was joining the neighbourhood last fall.
The business replaces Mum'z Rasoi + Bar at 1480 W 11th Ave.
Mum'z made no closure announcement on its socials or website, however, the restaurant was last active on Instagram in June 2023 and is categorized as "gone out of business" in the City of Vancouver's business license records.
Sirka "is the brainchild of Chef Kanwardeep and Chef Baldeep," describes the restaurant on its website. "It is a modern, bold, inventive, inquisitive royal Indian restaurant holding up to its name by serving people with an experience of unapologetically authentic Indian food."
The launch of Sirka marks another in what has turned out to be a long line of Indian restaurant ventures at the same West 11th Avenue address going back nearly 30 years. Not only does Sirka follow Mum'z Rasoi, but previous concepts in the space include Bombay Kitchen + Bar, Vij's Rangoli, and, before that, Vij's (which moved there from its original West Broadway home in 1996).
Last fall, V.I.A. reached out to Sirka to inquire about the addition of the South Granville location to their restaurant portfolio but did not receive a response.
It appears Sirka opened its doors in mid-December 2023. The menu features several chaat dishes, which are savoury snacks, like fish or paneer pakoras, Masala fries, and momos (dumplings), as well as vegetarian or meat curries, tandoori kebab selections, a kheema (ground beef and peas) burger, combos, and more. The restaurant also serves cocktails.
According to Google, Sirka's Vancouver location is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sirka can be found on Instagram @itssirka.
