After a few short months of being dark, the Fraser Street address that was home to the beloved Ubuntu Canteen has seen a flurry of activity recently, as new operators have taken over the business and are prepping to open a seafood and oyster bar with cocktails in the space.
Called Bar Bravo, the venture is sliding in at 4194 Fraser St and is aiming to be open in August, according to social media posts from the restaurant.
"It’s been a 20 year journey through the culinary industry. And I’m happy to announce that with the help of our friends, [Jon Merrill] @thelordofthecat and I will be opening @bravovancouver on Fraser Street before the end of this summer," announced Jonah Joffe via Instagram @jayhovaa. "Showcasing sustainable seafoods, an oyster bar and of course a real dope cocktail menu," adds Joffe.
Joffe is a Red Seal chef who recently was in the post of Executive Sous Chef at Vancouver's Peake of Catering. Merrill spent several years with well-known Vancouver oyster bar and seafood restaurant Chewies, and is also the owner and operator of Salt & Earth Catering Co.
Ubuntu vacated the space in mid-April, leaving locals and loyalists devastated at the loss of the Michelin Guide-recognized spot.
A recent drive-by shows some renovation work was ongoing in the corner space, and the restaurant's social media teases indicate Bar Bravo is "opening really soon."
