Tap into the simple flavours of Americana at this new beer hall-style joint from the team behind Wildebeest, Bufala, and Lucky Taco. They've got cheeseburgers, onion rings, soft serve, and 18 beers on tap.

Dosanko

We may be most familiar with Japanese fare in the form of specialities like sushi or ramen. Now Dosanko has arrived to get our tastebuds tapped into "home-style" Japanese food, as in what you might prepare for and enjoy with your family in your home. Find comforting eats like Omu-Rice, curries, tonkatsu (breaded and fried) pork chops, and a selection of whiskies and sake.

Address: 566 Powell Street, Unit #100

Festal

It had to happen eventually: Paleo diets super popular, so now Vancouver has its own Festal Paleo Cafe. Their menu is fully paleo, organic, gluten free, low carb, sugar, and GMO free. If this is up your alley, hit them up in downtown on Granville Street (in the old Cannibal Cafe/Masaladobo space).

Address: 433 Granville Street

OddFish

Kitsilano's OddFish is the new seafood-centric spot from the same team behind neighbourhood faves Nook and Tavola. Their fresh-sheet style menu focuses on everything out of the ocean, from oysters to steaming bowls of mussels.

Address: 1889 West 1st Avenue

Cacao 70 Dippery

True, this isn't a restaurant, but you can probably make a meal out of the super sweet treats at this branch of Quebec's everything chocolate chain. Cacao 70's first Vancouver "dippery" is the new go-to for soft serve ice cream that gets a satisfying dunk in your choice of their dips, or coatings, with flavours like Matcha, Black Sesame, Maple, Coffee, and Earl Grey.

Address: 433 Abbott Street

Fayuca

For the chance to sample modern Mexican cuisine (and not the usual tacos and combo plates) check out Fayuca, which is up and running in Yaletown. The restaurant offers Northern Pacific Mexican cuisine; look for dishes like an Oxtail Fideo Pasta or a grilled cactus and halloumi salad.

Address: 1009 Hamilton Street

Kokomo

Vegan eating in Vancouver got a whole lot more delicious with summer's addition of the modest Chinatown location of Kokomo. Setting up in the very Instagram-friendly and pink-hued space that was briefly the home of an ill-fated ice cream shop called Fluffy Kittens, Kokomo is where you can find vegan salads and bowls, and the only place in Canada you can get a swirled cup of an Aussie import dairy-free dessert called Cocowhip.

Address: 611 Gore Street

Yuwa

Yuwa isn't totally new--it's actually a re-imagining of Zest, with a new chef and a new shift in focus for the Japanese restaurant. Executive Chef Masahiro Omori was inspired by his maternal grandmother, Yuwa, who owned a fish market in Japan, for his take on Japanese cuisine using fresh B.C. ingredients.

Address: 2775 West 16th Avenue

St. Lawrence

This French Canadian upscale restaurant was a long time in the works, and it's now open and dazzling diners with its hearty, elegant fare. Here Chef JC Poirier is behind a menu of rustic "haute country" food--think tourtiere, braised rabbit, terrines, and decadent ingredients like bone marrow, escargot, and lots of butter and cream.

Address: 269 Powell Street

Sombreros

This brand new combo taqueria and Mexican specialty grocery store has a simple menu of tacos, tacos, and more tacos, and they offer them at the muy bueno price of four for $10. Meaty options include Tinga (chicken), Pastor (marinated pork), and Carne Asada (beef), and their veggie is a classic Rajas (mushroom and pepper), which you can load up on at five for $10.
